Herbs & Their Benefits

There are thousands of herbs and the list of benefits is almost never ending. God gave us exactly what we needed directly from nature.
Lets jump in

1. Basil

You can throw basil in almost anything, but it is also commonly used in Italian dishes.

It’s great for adding flavor in soups or sauces. It’s also vital to use in a Cuban black bean recipe. Most of the health benefits of basil come from two parts of the basil plant: basil’s flavonoids and volatile oils. Basil has anti-inflammatory benefits and also helps prevent and fight heart disease.

Basil contains many vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin. Many of basil’s health benefits come from these antioxidants, as well as its essential oils. These compounds mostly disappear during the drying process, so opt for fresh basil whenever possible to gain the most benefits.

2. Cilantro

So tasty and versatile.. Cilantro is most common in Mexican and Asian dishes.

The flavor is strong so use sparingly! Cilantro is also a strong anti-inflammatory herb. Coriander contains both cineole, a terpene, and linoleic acid, a carboxylic acid.

These compounds possess antirheumatic and antiarthritic properties that reduce swelling in the joints and surrounding tissues.

Cilantro can also reduce the severity of these conditions. It helps reduce cholesterol and also soothes irritable bowels.

Lowers blood sugar

Coriander seeds, extract, and oils may all help lower blood sugar. In fact, people who have low blood sugar or take diabetes medication should practice caution with coriander because it’s so effective in lowering blood sugar. Animal studies suggest that coriander seeds reduce blood sugar by promoting enzyme activity that helps remove sugar from the blood.

3. Dill

A tasty addition to dips, soups, herb butters, salads and fish dishes, dill has the strongest flavor just before flowering occurs.

Dill is an annual plant used for centuries both in cooking and as a medicinal herb. Native to the Mediterranean, southern Russia, and Scandinavia, today dill is cultivated throughout America, Europe, and Asia.

You may have had your first experience with dill’s pleasant taste in cooking or pickled vegetables. Dill helps you relieve gas and prevent diarrhea. It also aids in indigestion and reduces menstrual cramps.

If you have insomnia, dill may help you sleep. The flavonoids and B vitamins in the herb act as relaxants, and eating dill or drinking it in a tea has calming effects.

You might just reach for dill instead of over-the-counter sleep aids the next time you can’t get to sleep.

4. Mint

1. Treats all your stomach woes
Mint leaves are anti-inflammatory in nature which helps in reducing any inflammation in your stomach. Mint leaves also help relieve indigestion.

2. Boosts your immune system
Mint leaves are rich in phosphorus, calcium and vitamins like C, D, E and A which improve the body’s immune system. It also protects your cells from any damage, thereby reducing the risk of any chronic illness.

3. Gives you acne-free skin
Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, it soothes and calms your skin which can prove to be beneficial for treating acne. Mint leaves contain high levels of salicylic acid which is known for combating acne and blemishes.

4. Oregano

Protecting against cancer
Some of the ingredients in oregano may have anticancer properties.
Scientists have found evidence that extracts may help prevent DNA damage in cells due to oxidative stress, radiation, and mitogens, a type of protein that can cause unwanted cell division.
Researchers have also found evidence that carvacrol and thymol may prevent melanoma cells from growing and skin cancer from spreading.

Diabetes
Compounds in oregano may help manage type 2 diabetes.. Authors of a 2016 rodent study concluded that Origanum extract may help:
● improve insulin resistance
● regulate the expression of genes that affect fat and carbohydrate metabolism
● restore damaged liver and kidney tissues

Antibacterial Properties
The main components of oregano essential oil are carvacrol and thymol. These may have antimicrobial properties. The oil showed “significant antibacterial activity” against 11 such microbes. This suggests that substances in oregano could play a role in fighting diseases that no longer respond to antibiotics.
